I'm always on the hunt for new Italian treats, so when pastry chef Christina Hanks suggested this Lombardian torta as a special holiday offering this year I was super excited. Like crumb topping and shortbread baked to a crisp with just the right amount of anise seed to complement the almonds. It's big enough to share (about 7"), and the fun is breaking off pieces and watching everyone's eyes light up.
